Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene will undergo season-ending surgery on his elbow, the team’s president of baseball operations, Nick Krall, announced on Friday. This will be Greene’s second procedure on the same joint this year, following an arthroscopic operation in March to extract bone chips.
Greene made five starts for the Reds before being shut down due to soreness in a bullpen session. He was placed on the 15-day injured list the next day. Reds orthopedic surgeon Tim Kremchek examined Greene, and the pitcher also underwent an MRI. Greene then traveled to Los Angeles to get a second opinion from noted orthopedist Neal ElAttrache, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ team physician.
According to Krall, both doctors indicated that the ligament in Greene’s elbow is failing and will require some sort of procedure. The extent of the surgery will not be known until the operation is performed.
Greene, who turned 27 on Thursday, went 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA this season, striking out 33 and walking nine in 27 2/3 innings. He has spent all five of his major league seasons with the Reds, compiling a 27-31 record with a 3.82 ERA, 650 strikeouts, and 188 walks in 523 1/3 innings.
