Elly De La Cruz, the Cincinnati Reds’ star shortstop, is nearing his return to the team after a hamstring injury. On Monday, De La Cruz ran and took part in pregame drills, but he is still not quite ready to rejoin the Reds.
Recovery Progress
According to Reds manager Terry Francona, De La Cruz is “90 percent healed” from the injury that forced him to go on the injured list at the beginning of the month. De La Cruz ran the bases and took infield practice before the Reds’ game against the New York Mets at Great American Ball Park on Monday.
The Reds are 3-9 in De La Cruz’s absence entering Monday, coming off a series loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend. When De La Cruz, 24, can return to the lineup, he will provide a major boost to the Reds’ lineup that has scored the fourth fewest runs in the National League.
Before he was put on the injured list on June 1, De La Cruz hit 12 home runs with a 131 OPS+ and 10 stolen bases this season, putting him in strong position to earn an All-Star nod next month.
