A record number of travelers are expected to hit the roads and skies for the Fourth of July, with over 72 million people traveling for Independence Day, according to AAA. The majority, 61.4 million, will travel by car, despite gas prices being at four-year highs.
Travel Forecast
The 9-day travel forecast includes travelers who are vacationing all week and people just getting away for the long holiday weekend. While the overall number of Independence Day travelers appears to be plateauing, AAA is still expecting record volumes this year.
Air travelers will make up 8% of the share of holiday travelers, with AAA projecting 5.85 million people taking domestic flights over July 4th. Renting a car is also expected to be more expensive this year, with domestic car rentals up 10%.
Popular destinations include Alaska cruises, Seattle, Anchorage, and Fairbanks, as well as Independence Day fireworks and festivities in New York, Chicago, and Boston. Florida is also a top destination, thanks to its theme parks, beaches, and cruise ports.
