Real Madrid stars decline Ceuta solidarity shirts amid migrant debate

Three of Real Madrid’s most high‑profile players – French forwards Kylian Mbappé and Ibrahima Konaté, and Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior – chose not to wear solidarity shirts supporting the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta before Tuesday night’s La Liga match against Elche at the Manuel Martínez Valero stadium.

Shirt controversy

The shirts bore the slogan “We are all Caballas,” a phrase that identifies residents of Ceuta. The club had announced on its website that both teams would display the message as a sign of unity with the enclave, which has been overwhelmed by an influx of illegal migrants from Morocco since late July.

During the pre‑match walk‑out, Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior rolled the shirts up and kept them hidden, while Konaté was seen holding his shirt in his hands. When the official team photo was taken, the two forwards removed the shirts entirely, revealing their standard Real Madrid kits.

Background on the Ceuta situation

Ceuta, a Spanish city on the North African coast, has a population of roughly 85,000. In the past month, an estimated 72,000 illegal migrants crossed from Morocco into the enclave, straining local resources and prompting protests across Spain. Regional leader Juan Jesús Vivas described the episode as a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity rather than a simple migratory surge.

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Madrid and other cities, demanding that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government adopt a tougher stance on the crisis. Organizers claim the influx threatens public safety and the cultural fabric of the city.

Reactions from the football world

Real Madrid fans had previously displayed a large tifo of Ceuta flags during the club’s Champions League match against Inter Milan, underscoring the passionate support for the enclave among the club’s base. The decision by the three stars, however, has drawn criticism from some Spanish supporters who view the refusal as a lack of solidarity.

Moroccan player Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, who wore a similar shirt for Real Betis, faced threats and backlash from compatriots who interpreted the gesture as a political statement against Morocco. Ezzalzouli defended his actions on Instagram, emphasizing that the shirt’s purpose was humanitarian – to support residents of a region facing hardship, regardless of nationality.

What this means for the club and the debate

While the incident has generated media attention, Real Madrid has not issued a formal comment on the players’ choices. The club’s earlier statement highlighted its intention to stand with Ceuta, but the on‑field display fell short of that promise.

Observers note that the episode reflects the broader tension in Spanish society over immigration policy, national identity, and the role of public figures in political discourse. As the migrant situation continues to evolve, both political leaders and cultural icons are likely to face increased pressure to articulate clear positions.

Looking ahead

The La Liga match proceeded without further incident, and Real Madrid secured a victory over Elche. Whether the shirt controversy will influence future club initiatives or spark additional debate remains to be seen, but the episode underscores how sports can become a flashpoint in larger societal conflicts.
