The project aims to overhaul the terminal to better serve modern travelers while maintaining the airport’s current capacity. The terminal is currently home to Air Canada, Frontier, and Southwest Airlines. The proposed redesign will feature nine gates, with a new design and location to accommodate future aviation needs.
Travelers have expressed the need for modernization, citing the current layout as cramped. Frequent traveler Carol Rentas noted that the baggage area is particularly congested, saying, “Especially in the baggage area, I wait for baggage… [we need] more spaces, more touchdown spaces for relaxing.” Other passengers have also expressed the sentiment that the terminal has outgrown its current footprint.
However, not everyone is eager for a massive overhaul. Some travelers appreciate the airport’s current convenience and unique history. As the environmental study progresses, more concrete details and timelines are expected to emerge regarding the future of Reagan’s Terminal 1.
