Razorbacks visit Fayetteville High to promote mental‑health awareness

Fayetteville, Ark. – On Friday, the Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball team visited Fayetteville High School for a special pep rally aimed at raising awareness about mental‑health challenges and suicide prevention among students. Head coach John Calipari and several players addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of asking for help and living in the present.

Coach Calipari’s message to students

“Everyone has issues. That’s why you treat people right. You don’t know what they’re going through,” Calipari told the assembled students. He warned that the pressures facing young people today can lead to mental‑health struggles if left unaddressed. “With all that’s going on, if we don’t address some of this stuff, we’re going to have some mental‑health issues,” he said.

Calipari also urged students to focus on the present rather than become consumed by worries about the future. “Stay in the moment. Don’t worry about the future,” he added.

CareSource partnership

The rally was part of CareSource’s college‑basketball initiative, which funds mental‑health programs and suicide‑prevention efforts across the state. During the event, CareSource presented checks to Fayetteville High School to support its ongoing mental‑health services.

One of the messages shared with the students highlighted the power of hope: “We can live five days without food, three days without water, three minutes without air, but we can’t live one second without hope.” Organizers said they hope the event reinforces that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Community response

Students cheered as the Razorbacks entered the gym, blending the energy of a traditional school rally with a serious conversation about resilience and support. Parents and faculty members in attendance praised the collaboration, noting that the presence of a beloved local sports team helped draw attention to a topic that often remains hidden.

“Having the Razorbacks here shows that mental‑health matters to everyone in our community, on and off the court,” said a Fayetteville High parent who attended the rally.

Looking ahead

CareSource and Fayetteville High School plan to continue offering resources such as counseling, peer‑support groups, and educational workshops throughout the school year. The partnership aims to create a lasting culture of openness around mental‑health issues, encouraging students to reach out before problems become crises.

By combining the excitement of college basketball with a clear, faith‑affirming message of hope and resilience, the event sought to equip students with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges while reinforcing the values of family, community, and personal responsibility.
