Rays rout Rockies 13-9 in high-scoring affair at Coors Field

The Tampa Bay Rays handed the Colorado Rockies a lopsided defeat Monday at Coors Field in Denver, pulling away for a 13-9 victory in a game that lived up to the ballpark’s reputation for offensive fireworks.

The Rays came into the Mile High City and left with a commanding win, outscoring the home side by four runs in what shaped up to be a back-and-forth offensive showcase. Tampa Bay’s ability to sustain pressure and pile on runs proved to be the difference, as Colorado was unable to keep pace despite putting nine runs on the board themselves.

Coors Field, long known as one of the most hitter-friendly environments in Major League Baseball, delivered on that promise once again. The combined 22 runs between the two clubs made for an entertaining, if frustrating, afternoon for the home faithful in Denver. Colorado’s pitching staff struggled to contain a Rays lineup that kept finding ways to extend innings and add to its lead throughout the contest.

For the Rockies, the loss is another setback in what has been a difficult stretch. Surrendering 13 runs at home is a tough pill to swallow for a Colorado club that needed a win to gain ground in the standings. The inability to slow down Tampa Bay’s offense, even with the thin air of Denver theoretically working in the favor of both offenses, underscored the pitching challenges that have plagued this Rockies squad.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, showed the kind of offensive depth that makes the Rays a dangerous opponent regardless of the venue. Scoring 13 runs on the road, particularly in a park where pitchers already face an uphill battle, speaks to the quality of at-bats the Rays were able to string together throughout the afternoon. The victory gives Tampa Bay a confidence-boosting road win and keeps the club moving in a positive direction.

The Rockies will need to regroup quickly, as allowing double-digit runs at home is not a formula for success at any point in the season. Colorado’s offense did show some fight, plating nine runs of its own, but the pitching simply could not match what Tampa Bay’s bats were producing on the day.

The final score of 13-9 tells the story of a game that was never truly settled until the Rays had built an insurmountable cushion. For Colorado fans at Coors Field, there were moments of excitement, but Tampa Bay ultimately had too much firepower to be denied on this Monday afternoon in Denver.
