Five rare Northern African lion cubs have been born at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, England, as part of an international conservation breeding program. The newborns are the third litter to arrive at the zoo in less than two years.
Conservation Efforts
The cubs were born to five-year-old lioness Waka and four-year-old dad Malik, and were monitored via a hidden ‘cubcam’. The zoo said that by the next afternoon, all five cubs were settled and feeding peacefully alongside their mother.
The five new arrivals bring the pride’s total to 11, the largest it has ever been. Steve Merrick-White, team leader of predators at Whipsnade Zoo, said that the new litter is a significant addition to the conservation breeding program for Northern African lions.
