Ranchero Village Rebuilds After Tornado Devastation in Largo

In Largo, Florida, the Ranchero Village community is in the midst of recovery efforts nearly a year after an EF 1 tornado caused significant damage. The tornado, which struck with little warning, affected an estimated 40-50 homes, leaving residents to face the daunting task of rebuilding.

Community Resilience

Norman Runkles, the president of the Homeowners Association at Ranchero Village, has been at the forefront of these efforts. Having experienced the tornado firsthand, Runkles described the event as unlike any other natural disaster due to the lack of preparation time. “When the tornado is on top of you, there’s nothing you can do except sit there and just wait for the mercy of whatever’s coming,” he explained.

Despite the destruction of his own home, Runkles and his wife have found solace in the fact that they were able to purchase a new home and that their vehicles remained undamaged. “We are thankful in a lot of ways,” Runkles said, emphasizing the importance of safety over material loss.

Ongoing Reconstruction

The community management company has been instrumental in addressing the damage, with many homes already demolished and others slated for future removal. Renovations are underway for community facilities like the lakeside and corral, aiming to restore stability and normalcy to the area.

Runkles noted that some residents, particularly older individuals, have relocated with family members due to the changes brought about by the tornado. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about the community’s future. “They’re moving along, getting things, trying to get this park back to where it’s got some stability with the people living here,” he shared.

Counting his blessings, Runkles reflected on the situation as an inconvenience rather than a tragedy, grateful that no lives were lost. “Everybody’s alive,” he said, underscoring the community’s resilience and determination to rebuild.
