We are living in an era where irrational and nonsensical ideas about raising kids have become dominant. This has led to a collective parental psychosis, where parents are forsaking the collective wisdom of centuries of human experience. Instead, they are favoring advice from so-called parenting experts that is damaging to families, schools, and communities.
The Era of Collective Parental Psychosis
This era began to develop in the 1950s and 1960s, with the rise of parenting experts who wrote best-sellers that were consumed by parents en masse. These books taught or were misinterpreted as teaching lessons that have negatively affected our families, schools, and communities. Some of these terrible ideas include never saying ‘no’ to a kid, assuming negative behaviors are a sign of mental illness, and protecting kids from all harm at all costs.
These ideas have become omnipresent in the minds of modern parents, thanks to social media. Social media algorithms spread ideas that make people feel rather than think, leading to the proliferation of destructive ideas. Conversely, few parents want to share their experiences of setting limits, holding their kids accountable, or dealing with their kids’ misbehavior, for fear of being labeled as not nice or sensitive enough.
A Call to Return to Traditional Values
We need to have the courage to return to the collective wisdom of centuries of human experience. It is true that kids should work hard, be resilient, be kind, and respect their elders. These truths are not subjective, but rather based on the experience of wise human beings throughout history. We should start reading and listening again, learning real truths about how to raise our kids.
