Rainfall eases drought in Sandhills while many NC areas still need more precipitation

Recent rainfall has brought welcome relief to parts of the Sandhills region, yet much of central North Carolina continues to grapple with below‑normal precipitation. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows a mixed picture: isolated pockets of above‑normal rain contrast sharply with extensive areas still marked in orange and brown, indicating severe deficits.

Where the rain fell

Since the beginning of August, the Sandhills have received the bulk of the rain. Fayetteville and Raeford recorded some of the highest totals, and the town of Clayton saw an isolated surge that pushed its numbers above the regional average. These locations now show up in blue or green on the drought map, signifying rainfall at or above normal levels.

Areas still dry

By contrast, the Raleigh‑Durham International Airport (RDU) area, Oxford and the observation site at Kerr Dam have each logged only one to two inches of rain during the same period. Those figures translate to a percent of normal rainfall that remains far below expectations, keeping large swaths of the state in the orange‑brown drought band.

Impact on water resources

Kerr Lake’s reservoir level continues to fall, now sitting more than ten feet below its full‑pool elevation of 300 feet. When compared with the same time last year, the lake is over eight feet lower, a shortfall that contributes to the persistence of severe and extreme drought conditions in northern parts of the state.

Positive developments

On the upside, the Sandhills have seen enough rain to be removed from the drought designation, a welcome change for farmers and residents who rely on consistent moisture for crops and livestock. The improvement underscores how localized weather patterns can quickly shift conditions in a region.

Looking ahead

Forecasters expect a strengthening El Niño through the winter months, which could usher in a wetter pattern across the Triangle and surrounding areas. While the outlook offers hope for increased precipitation, officials caution that it may take time for reservoir levels to rebound and for drought‑related restrictions to be lifted.

What residents can do

Local water authorities continue to advise conservation measures, especially in counties still experiencing severe drought. Residents are encouraged to monitor local water‑use advisories, consider rain‑water harvesting where permissible, and stay informed about upcoming weather updates from the National Weather Service.
