As rain showers sweep across Connecticut, numerous towns have decided to cancel their Memorial Day parades, a cherished tradition for many families honoring those who served. The decision affects parades in Waterbury, Norwalk, Bantam, Monroe, Tolland, Milford, and Orange, among others.
Local Adjustments
In response to the weather, the Ledyard Lions Club has postponed its parade to June 27, with a rain date of June 28. Meanwhile, Meriden’s parade, initially rescheduled to later on Monday, has been canceled entirely. However, a Memorial Day Remembrance ceremony will still take place at 2 p.m. on the Meriden Green amphitheater.
Westport has also canceled its parade, opting instead for an indoor ceremony at the Town Hall Auditorium at 10:00 a.m. East Hartford will follow a similar plan, moving its Memorial Day Program indoors at Town Hall, with a livestream available on the town’s Facebook page.
Other Towns’ Plans
Norwalk’s parade is among those canceled, while West Haven has adjusted its parade start time from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring a flyover by the Connecticut Air National Guard. West Hartford will hold an indoor ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Town Hall auditorium.
Old Saybrook has canceled its parade but will proceed with three events on Monday: a Naval wreath-laying ceremony at 9 a.m., a wreath-laying outside the firehouse for two firefighters lost in the line of duty at 9:30 a.m., and a ceremony inside the firehouse at 10 a.m.
While the morning may see a few more showers, the afternoon promises better weather with some sunshine and temperatures in the 60s and 70s, offering a glimmer of hope for those looking to honor Memorial Day in other ways.
