Rahr & Sons Pours Cold Beer in a Warm Old Building

Division Brewing occupies a renovated space on Industrial Boulevard that most people drive past without a second look. That is their loss.

The taproom sits inside a repurposed industrial building in McKinney’s emerging maker corridor, a short drive from the historic square but a world removed from it in atmosphere. The ceilings are high, the walls are exposed brick and corrugated metal, and the bar runs long enough that there is almost always an open stool. On weekend afternoons, the patio fills with groups who bring their dogs and settle in for a few hours rather than a single round.

What catches first-timers off guard is the range on the tap list. Division does not lean exclusively on IPAs or hazy doubles, the way so many newer Texas breweries do. On any given visit, the lineup might include a dry Irish stout, a kettle-soured wheat, a sessionable lager, and two or three hop-forward options. The lager, in particular, drinks cleaner than anything a macro brewery is putting out at twice the price. A pint runs around seven or eight dollars, and the pours are honest.

The brewing program takes its cues from both German tradition and American craft experimentation, which sounds like a contradiction until the glass is in hand. The malt-forward beers have weight without being cloying. The sours hit tart without going harsh. There is craft here — genuine craft — not just the aesthetic of craft dressed up in a logo.

Food is kept simple. The kitchen rotates, and sometimes a food truck is on-site; other times, snacks and shareable bites are available at the bar. Regulars know to check the taproom’s social media before arriving if dinner is the plan, but no one seems to show up expecting a full dining experience. That is not what this place is.

The crowd skews local and unpretentious. On a Tuesday evening, the taproom draws what looks like a cross-section of McKinney’s working population — contractors still in dusty work shirts, couples with laptops splitting the difference between a date night and a remote office, a few older regulars who clearly have a favorite stool. There is no DJ, no trivia night competing for attention, no televisions tuned to sports. The conversation carries itself.

Flights are available and worth ordering for anyone still finding their bearings on the tap list. Four four-ounce pours for around twelve dollars lets a table work through options before committing to a full pint. The staff behind the bar can describe each beer without lapsing into jargon, which matters more than it sounds.

Division Brewing is not trying to become a destination. It is trying to be a neighborhood brewery, and in McKinney’s northern reaches, that is exactly what it has become. The building may not look like much from the street, but the beer earns the detour.
