Former Chicago mayor and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel cautioned his party against pursuing impeachment of President Trump should Democrats capture the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Emanuel said an impeachment effort would become a “food fight” and distract from more substantive goals.
Focus on ethics, not impeachment
Emanuel argued that Democrats should instead deliver a comprehensive ethics reform package, using ongoing investigations as a catalyst for change. “Short answer: No, because it’s not going anywhere, and it’s going to be a food fight,” he said, adding that a failed impeachment would only confirm the public’s negative view of Washington.
He emphasized the need for legislation that makes life more affordable for American families, noting that the Democratic leadership has not ruled anything in or out regarding accountability, but is prioritizing cost‑of‑living relief.
Election outlook
Current projections show Democrats poised to win 215 House seats versus 201 for Republicans, meaning they need only three of the 19 contested races to secure a majority. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has not confirmed whether impeachment would be a priority, though he has suggested it is not at the top of the agenda.
Emanuel, who served two terms as Chicago mayor and as chief of staff to former President Barack Obama, is rumored to be considering a 2028 presidential bid. He positioned himself as a moderate Democrat opposed to the influence of democratic socialists, while also expressing support for certain progressive candidates.
Party dynamics
During a recent Texas Tribune Festival appearance, Emanuel praised Texas Senate nominee James Talarico for his willingness to discuss his faith, and later indicated support for Democratic Senate victories in Michigan, despite mixed comments about candidate Abdul El‑Sayed.
While acknowledging internal debates, Emanuel stressed that the party must maintain a coalition of pragmatic and progressive wings to avoid being pulled toward extreme positions.
