Racing Louisville star Savannah DeMelo sues UofL Health over cardiac arrest care

Louisville, Ky. – Racing Louisville forward Savannah DeMelo is taking legal action against UofL Health and two of its doctors, claiming the medical team failed to diagnose and treat a serious heart condition that caused her to collapse on the field during a match in Seattle on Sept. 14, 2025.

Background of the medical complaint

According to the complaint filed in Kentucky state court, DeMelo began experiencing chest pain, dizziness, and shortness of breath in early 2025. She was referred to a cardiologist by UofL Health, but the lawsuit alleges that the specialists did not identify the underlying problem.

Six months after her initial symptoms, DeMelo was playing in a regular‑season match when she suddenly collapsed. Emergency responders diagnosed her with ventricular tachycardia, a rapid and potentially lethal heart rhythm, and she was treated on the field before being transported to a hospital.

Claims in the lawsuit

DeMelo’s attorneys argue that the physicians’ failure to properly evaluate her symptoms and order appropriate testing directly contributed to the cardiac arrest. The complaint seeks compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, permanent impairment, physical and mental suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life.

“Every athlete relies on timely, accurate medical care to stay safe on the field,” DeMelo’s lawyer said in a statement. “When that care is neglected, the consequences can be life‑changing.”

UofL Health’s response

UofL Health declined to comment on the pending litigation, citing the standard practice of not discussing ongoing legal matters.

Impact on the community and the sport

The case has drawn attention from both the local sports community and health‑care advocates in Kentucky. While the lawsuit is a civil matter, it raises broader questions about how professional athletes receive medical evaluation for cardiac symptoms, especially when those symptoms could be dismissed as routine fatigue.

Local physicians note that ventricular tachycardia, though rare, can be triggered by underlying structural heart disease or electrical abnormalities that may not appear on standard tests. Early detection often requires advanced imaging or electrophysiology studies, which can be costly and sometimes overlooked.

Racing Louisville, the club that employs DeMelo, released a brief statement expressing sympathy for the player and emphasizing its commitment to player safety. “We stand with Savannah as she seeks answers and hope for a swift resolution that protects all athletes,” the statement read.

Legal precedent and next steps

Medical malpractice suits involving professional athletes are not new, but they are relatively uncommon in Kentucky. The outcome of DeMelo’s case could influence how sports teams and health systems handle cardiac screening and emergency protocols.

The lawsuit is scheduled for a pre‑trial conference later this year. Until a court decision is rendered, both parties will continue to prepare their arguments and gather expert testimony.

What readers should know

For Kentucky residents concerned about cardiac health, doctors recommend seeking immediate evaluation for persistent chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath, especially if symptoms occur during physical activity. Early consultation with a cardiologist and, when indicated, advanced testing can help identify conditions like ventricular tachycardia before they become life‑threatening.
