Racing Community Honors Kyle Busch at Memorial Day Events

The motorsports community came together over Memorial Day weekend to honor the late NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, who passed away at the age of 41 due to severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis. His untimely death sent shockwaves through the racing world and beyond.

Tributes at Coca-Cola 600

At the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Busch had previously claimed victory in 2018, NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway paid tribute to the two-time Cup Series champion. A large, black No. 8 with Busch’s signature was displayed on the frontstretch grass, and his image was prominently featured on the videoboard. The U.S. Army Golden Knights carried Busch’s flag during pre-race festivities, following a moment of silence. Each of the 39 cars in the race carried Busch’s decal, and the speedway’s public address system, along with television commentators, went silent on the eighth lap in his honor.

Fans arrived in large numbers wearing shirts that read “Rowdy” and “KFB,” showing their support and admiration for Busch. Drivers Layne Riggs and Ross Chastain paid homage by performing Busch’s traditional bow to the crowd after their respective race wins.

Indianapolis 500 Honors

Earlier in the day, the Indianapolis 500 also paid tribute to Busch. Dale Coyne Racing altered the font on Romain Grosjean’s No. 18 car to match the style Busch used during his 14 seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing. During the opening prayer, Busch was mentioned by name, and on Lap 18, the scoring pylon displayed his name, birth year, and 2026.

Busch’s impact on the sport was evident as fans and fellow racers alike expressed their sorrow and shared memories. Katherine Legge and Josef Newgarden, among others, reflected on the fragility of life and the legacy Busch leaves behind, particularly as a father of two.

A Lasting Legacy

Richard Childress Racing announced that Busch’s No. 8 would be retired from use, with the possibility of it being reserved for Busch’s son, Brexton, should he choose to pursue a NASCAR career. Fans from across the country shared their personal stories of meeting Busch, highlighting his authenticity and the connections he fostered within the racing community.

Kyle Busch’s legacy as one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history will continue to be celebrated by fans and fellow racers alike, as they remember the impact he had both on and off the track.
