Rabies Cases Found in Baby Goats at NC Mobile Petting Zoo; Residents Asked to Contact Health Officials

Western North Carolina residents were warned this week after a mobile petting zoo’s baby goats were confirmed to have rabies. The animals, part of Farm Adventures’ traveling exhibit, were euthanized after a necropsy revealed the virus.

What happened

Farm Adventures, based in Iredell County, operates the petting zoo at events throughout the region. Between July 28 and August 27 the zoo visited several locations, including the Masonic Picnic in Mocksville (August 15), a private gathering near Hickory (August 9), and the Breeden Amphitheater in Lexington (August 1). During that period four infant goats—named Molly, Maggie, Cow and Uno—were bitten by a skunk that entered their pen. The goats showed no signs of illness at the time.

A later necropsy confirmed rabies infection, prompting the immediate euthanasia of the four kids. Farm Adventures said it is now closely monitoring the remaining animals under guidance from health officials.

Health guidance

State and county health departments emphasized that the risk is limited to individuals who had close contact with the infected goats. “There is not a broad risk to the public—only those who attended events at the mobile petting zoo and were in close contact with the goats are at risk,” officials said.

Mecklenburg County Health Director Dr. Kimberly Scott urged anyone who may have been exposed to call their local health department without waiting for symptoms. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but post‑exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is highly effective when administered promptly.

Why rabies matters

Rabies is a viral disease transmitted primarily through the saliva of infected animals, most often via bites. In rare cases, scratches or direct contact with mucous membranes can also spread the virus. The incubation period can last weeks to months, during which the infected person feels fine. Once neurological symptoms develop, the disease is nearly always fatal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports fewer than ten human rabies deaths in the United States each year, underscoring the importance of rapid medical evaluation after any possible exposure.

Next steps

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services continues to investigate the outbreak. Officials said additional details about exposure locations will be released as they become available.

Residents who attended any of the listed events or who handled the goats should contact their county health department for a rabies risk assessment and, if indicated, begin the recommended vaccination series.
