A person has been exposed to a rabid bat found near North Main and West Court streets in Greenville, according to the state Department of Public Health.

The person was referred to their health care provider. Anyone who suspects they may have come in contact with the bat should contact DPH’s Upstate Greenville-Spartanburg office at (864) 372-3270.
Bats are among a variety of wild animals that can get into homes and pose a risk to human health and safety. The state Department of Natural Resources notes that four of the 14 species of bats found in South Carolina are commonly associated with taking up residence in homes and other manmade structures.
SCDPH advises that no one should handle a bat or other wild animal with their bare hands. Bats that may have come into contact with people, pets or livestock should be safely trapped in a sealed container.
Rabies must be confirmed in a laboratory. The bat is the fourth animal to test positive for rabies in Greenville County so far this year. Across the state, 66 animals have tested positive for rabies in 2026.
