As Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary, a group of quilters from Missouri is commemorating the occasion by creating art pieces that highlight iconic landmarks along the historic highway.
Local Landmarks Featured
The Centennial Art Quilt Project honors landmarks along Route 66, stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles. Five quilts represent landmarks in New Mexico, including the La Mesa Motel in Santa Rosa, Tucumcari’s Tee Pee Curios and Blue Swallow Motel, and Albuquerque’s Dog House Drive-In and Casas de Suenos Old Town Inn.
The project is connecting people across generations, from longtime road-trippers to those experiencing Route 66 for the first time. The Bits ‘n’ Pieces Quilt Guild, founded in 1984, now has about 250 members interested in all kinds of quilting.
