Qualcomm and Amazon partner to create custom AI chips for data centers

Qualcomm, the San Diego‑based chipmaker, revealed on Tuesday a multi‑generation collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to design custom semiconductor chips for Amazon’s artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The partnership will focus on AI inference – the process of running trained AI models – a rapidly expanding market that has become a key battleground among semiconductor firms.

Boosting AI performance and bandwidth

The two companies will also co‑develop high‑speed optical connectivity technologies, targeting data‑center links capable of up to 1.6 terabits per second. This bandwidth is intended to meet the growing demand for fast data transfer in AI workloads, ensuring that AI models can be served to users with minimal latency.

Leveraging AWS services for faster chip design

As part of the agreement, Qualcomm plans to expand its use of AWS AI services and cloud infrastructure for chip‑design tasks. By moving design workloads to the cloud, Qualcomm expects to shorten development cycles, allowing new chips to reach the market more quickly.

Market impact

Qualcomm’s shares jumped more than 9% in pre‑market trading following the announcement, reflecting investor optimism about the company’s move into the AI data‑center space. The stock has slipped about 1% this year after a steep decline earlier in the year due to weaker smartphone demand, but the partnership with Amazon signals a strategic shift toward high‑growth AI markets.

Industry analysts note that custom AI chips are becoming essential for large cloud providers seeking to differentiate their services and reduce operating costs. By working directly with Amazon, Qualcomm aims to secure a foothold in this lucrative segment, competing with other semiconductor giants that are also racing to supply AI‑optimized hardware.

Looking ahead

The collaboration is expected to span several product generations, with both companies committing resources to research, development, and testing. While specific timelines for the first custom chip release were not disclosed, Qualcomm’s CEO indicated that the partnership will accelerate the rollout of AI‑focused hardware solutions.

Overall, the Qualcomm‑Amazon alliance underscores the growing importance of specialized chips and high‑speed connectivity in powering the next wave of AI applications, from cloud‑based services to edge computing.
