Qantas to retire its 10 Airbus A380 superjumbos by mid‑2028

Qantas Airways, Australia’s national airline, told investors on Thursday that it will start retiring its ten Airbus A380 superjumbos from mid‑2028, accelerating the timeline by four years. The decision reflects the airline’s effort to cut rising maintenance expenses and to shift toward newer, fuel‑efficient twin‑engine aircraft.

Why the A380 is being phased out

The four‑engine A380 was introduced to challenge the Boeing 747’s dominance on long‑haul routes. While the double‑deck jet can carry up to 853 passengers, its high fuel burn and costly upkeep have made it difficult for airlines to fill the 500‑plus seats needed for profitability. Production of the A380 ended in 2021, and supply‑chain constraints have further complicated its operation.

Financial impact for Qantas

Qantas International and Freight CEO Cam Wallace said the early retirement will unlock roughly A$300 million (about $215 million) in net cash‑flow benefit from fiscal 2028 through fiscal 2031, primarily by avoiding ongoing maintenance costs. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, the airline grounded its A380 fleet for more than 500 days, storing aircraft in California and Abu Dhabi.

Global A380 landscape

Since its launch in 2007 with Singapore Airlines, Airbus delivered 251 A380s before ending production. Today, 196 remain in service. Emirates is the largest operator with 116 aircraft, nearly half of all A380s ever built. Singapore Airlines and British Airways each operate 12, while Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways run eight each. Emirates plans to keep the superjumbo flying into the 2040s, but most other carriers expect to retire the type in the early 2030s.

Other airlines’ retirements

Air France retired its ten A380s in 2020, China Southern phased out five in late 2022, and Malaysia Airlines retired six in 2023. Several carriers, including Thai Airways, Lufthansa, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways, have already reduced their A380 fleets.

The shift away from the A380 underscores a broader industry trend toward more efficient twin‑engine wide‑bodies such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, which offer lower operating costs and greater route flexibility.
