PWHL championship trophy missing before scheduled Lethbridge appearance

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) announced Friday that the Walter Cup awarded to the league’s champion, Montreal Victoire, failed to arrive in Lethbridge, Alberta as scheduled. The league’s statement said the trophy “did not arrive as expected at its latest stop” and that officials are working closely with the shipping company to locate it.

Planned community event delayed

The missing trophy was slated to spend a day in Lethbridge, where Victoire forward Dara Greig was to host a public appearance at the city’s VisitLethbridge.com Arena. According to a source familiar with the plans, the container carrying the trophy arrived in Lethbridge, but the Walter Cup itself was not inside. Greig postponed the event, which had been set for Thursday, while the league investigates the disappearance.

What the Walter Cup represents

The Walter Cup is the league’s championship trophy, named for PWHL founder and primary financier Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra. While the original cup is permanently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, each championship team receives a replica to keep. The replica, like the original, is crafted from sterling silver by Tiffany & Co., weighs roughly 35 pounds (16 kilograms), and stands about 24 inches tall and 13 inches wide. Its design features two rod‑like hockey sticks supporting the cup, six engraved “W” letters for the league’s six founding franchises, and a base shaped like a puck bearing the names of championship teams.

Montreal Victoire’s historic win

Montreal Victoire earned the trophy by defeating Ottawa in Game 4 of a best‑of‑five series in May, becoming the PWHL’s first Canadian team to capture the title. The league’s earlier championships were won by Minnesota.

Logistical differences from the NHL

Unlike the National Hockey League, which assigns a dedicated caretaker to travel with the Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not have a person assigned to accompany its trophy on the road. This logistical gap may have contributed to the current situation, though the league has not confirmed any specific cause.

Next steps

The PWHL says it is in active communication with the shipping company to determine where the trophy was last seen and to retrieve it as quickly as possible. No further details have been released, and the league has not indicated when the Lethbridge event might be rescheduled.

Community impact

Local officials and fans expressed disappointment at the delay, noting that the planned appearance would have offered a unique opportunity for young athletes and community members to see the championship trophy up close. The incident underscores the importance of reliable logistics for high‑profile sports memorabilia, especially as women’s professional hockey continues to grow in popularity across Canada and the United States.
