Pulpit Rock Park Rises Just Above the City Noise

Pulpit Rock Park sits on the northwest edge of Woodland Park, and most people who live here have driven past the trailhead a hundred times without stopping.

That changes fast once someone actually pulls off. The park covers roughly 320 acres of ponderosa pine forest and open meadow, with a trail system that climbs to a sandstone outcropping — the eponymous pulpit — overlooking the city below and Pikes Peak to the southeast. At 8,500 feet of base elevation, the air already has weight to it, and the ascent adds another few hundred feet that most visitors feel in their lungs before they feel it in their legs.

The main trail runs about two miles out and back from the trailhead on Pulpit Rock Drive, off Baldwin Street on the north side of town. It’s not a technical route. No scrambling, no route-finding required, no permit. The path is wide enough to pass other hikers without the awkward shuffle. What it offers instead of drama is steadiness — a consistent grade through stands of pine, occasional granite boulders, and patches of open terrain where the views start appearing before the summit does.

At the top, the sandstone formation does resemble a pulpit, though that’s easier to see from the trail below than from standing on it. What matters more is the bench that someone placed nearby, and the fact that on a Tuesday morning in October, there’s a reasonable chance of having the whole thing to yourself. Elk are spotted regularly in the meadow sections near dusk. Mule deer are almost routine.

The park also connects to a secondary trail that loops back through the lower meadow, adding distance and variety if the out-and-back feels too simple. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the trailhead has a small parking area that fills up on summer weekends but rarely overflows before 9 a.m. There are no fees. The city maintains it, and it shows — the trail is clear, the signage is straightforward, and the trash cans at the trailhead get emptied.

What tends to surprise first-timers is how quickly the town disappears. Woodland Park is not a large city, but from the top of Pulpit Rock, the grid of houses and the strip of Highway 24 compress into something small and legible. Pikes Peak fills the southern sky in a way that photographs don’t quite capture because they flatten the distance. Standing up there, with the peak fully framed above the treeline, the scale of it finally registers.

Local runners use the trail for elevation training in the summer. Families with kids who are past the stroller stage make it a Saturday routine. Some people come specifically at golden hour in September, when the light on the sandstone goes orange and the aspens in the lower canyon are starting to turn. That window — late September, early morning or late afternoon — is probably the best single argument for the park, though it holds up in every season.

No admission. No gear required beyond reasonable footwear. Trailhead parking on Pulpit Rock Drive. Plan for an hour round-trip at a moderate pace, longer if the views at the top do what they tend to do.
