Pueblo County launches “Every Click Counts” seat‑belt safety campaign

Pueblo County is joining forces with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to tackle one of the county’s most pressing road‑safety concerns: low seat‑belt usage. The partnership has birthed the “Every Click Counts” coalition, a cross‑section of county officials, municipal leaders, educators, transportation experts and local businesses working together to encourage every driver and passenger to buckle up.

Why the campaign matters

According to CDOT’s annual Colorado Statewide Seat Belt Study, Pueblo County consistently ranks among the lowest in the state for seat‑belt compliance. That shortfall prompted coalition leaders to act last fall, forming a coordinated effort to raise awareness and change behavior before more lives are lost.

Official proclamation

Mayor Heather Graham officially designated September 9, 2026, as “Pueblo Seat Belt Awareness Day” in a formal proclamation. The proclamation underscores the city’s commitment to protecting families and highlights the coalition’s focus on children and young drivers, who are especially vulnerable on the road.

Community outreach and resources

Since its inception, the coalition has organized six community events, ranging from school‑yard presentations to public safety fairs. Organizers have also produced educational materials for local groups, making it easier for churches, youth organizations and businesses to spread the safety message.

New public displays promoting seat‑belt use have been installed at high‑traffic locations throughout Pueblo, including Colorado State University‑Pueblo, the Pueblo Zoo, Dutch Clark Stadium, the county courthouse and the American Driving Academy. These eye‑catching signs serve as constant reminders that a simple click can save a life.

Kids and young people in focus

CDOT officials stress that the coalition’s outreach is especially aimed at children and teenagers. In 2026, eight of the twelve passenger‑vehicle fatalities recorded in Pueblo County involved occupants who were not wearing seat belts. By targeting schools and youth programs, the coalition hopes to reverse that trend and instill safe habits early.

How residents can get involved

Community members are encouraged to attend upcoming events, share the coalition’s materials on social media and remind friends and family to buckle up every trip. Additional information, including safety tips and event calendars, is available on CDOT’s website.

The “Every Click Counts” initiative exemplifies how local government, state agencies and community partners can work together to protect families, uphold personal responsibility and strengthen the fabric of Pueblo’s neighborhoods.
