Project Jupiter Ensures Responsible Water Use in Doña Ana County

In Doña Ana County, New Mexico, Oracle’s Project Jupiter is making strides to ensure responsible water usage, a critical concern in the arid region. The project, which includes a data center and fuel cell power solution, has updated its water usage plans to address community concerns.

Non-Potable Water for Operations

Oracle has committed to using non-potable well water, sourced from an existing New Mexico rights holder, to cool the data center and operate the fuel cells. This approach ensures that the community’s drinking water supply remains unaffected. The non-potable water is unsuitable for drinking or municipal use, making it an ideal choice for industrial applications.

Closed-Loop Cooling System

Unlike many data centers that rely on evaporative cooling, Project Jupiter employs a closed-loop cooling system. This system requires a one-time fill of approximately 2.5 million gallons of non-potable water for each of the four data center buildings over a period of 2 to 3 years. The cooling liquid is continuously recycled, minimizing the need for additional water. Maintenance top-offs are minimal, amounting to about 0 to 1,000 gallons annually, equivalent to the water usage of approximately six U.S. households over 15 years.

Fuel Cell Technology

The project’s power plan includes fuel cell technology from Bloom Energy. This technology requires a one-time fill of approximately 960,000 gallons of water for startup, with no water needed during normal operations. Long-term maintenance is expected to use about 167,000 gallons per year, less than the annual water usage of two U.S. households. Over 15 years, this equates to the water usage of approximately three U.S. households per year.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

Overall, Project Jupiter’s water usage is minimal compared to other industries, such as golf courses, which can use up to 200 million gallons annually. The project promises significant economic benefits for New Mexico while safeguarding precious water resources. Additionally, the AI technology powered by Project Jupiter aims to optimize water consumption globally, offering solutions for agriculture, municipal infrastructure, and residential use.

Project Jupiter’s commitment to responsible water use aligns with the region’s long-term sustainability goals, ensuring that economic development does not come at the expense of vital natural resources.
