Private Jets Shift to Reliever Airports

As the private jet industry continues to grow, many travelers are opting to land at smaller, reliever airports instead of major hubs like JFK, LAX, or O’Hare. Airports such as Teterboro, Westchester County, Van Nuys, and Opa-locka are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to handle the overflow from congested primary airports.

What are Reliever Airports?

A reliever airport is a non-primary airport that is designated to handle general aviation traffic, including business jets, to alleviate congestion at major commercial airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) classifies these airports as reliever airports if they have 90 or more based aircraft.

According to the National Business Aviation Association, general aviation, including business jets, supports over one million U.S. jobs and generates approximately $340 billion in annual economic impact. This economic activity is not limited to major commercial airports but is also present at reliever airports, which are equipped to handle the overflow from primary airports.

Tracking Airport Traffic

There are two main tools used to track changes in airport traffic: the Air Traffic Activity Data System (ATADS) and the Operations Network (OPSNET). ATADS provides historical operation counts and airport rankings, while OPSNET logs facility-level operations for air traffic control workloads.

Private-industry trackers like ARGUS TRAQPak and WingX also provide valuable insights into business jet traffic, breaking down activity by aircraft segment and isolating business jet departures.

Impact of Restrictions and Disruptions

Flight restrictions, government shutdowns, and natural disasters have all contributed to the shift in private jet traffic to reliever airports. For example, the permanent security restriction around Mar-a-Lago has led to a significant increase in traffic at nearby airports, such as Fort Lauderdale International and Fort Lauderdale Executive.

The 2025 government shutdown also had a profound impact on airport traffic, with the FAA ordering flight reductions and barring general aviation, including business jets, from 12 of the busiest airports in the country. Reliever airports were the only available option for these flights, demonstrating the importance of these airports in handling overflow traffic.
