Prince George’s County schools open doors for new academic year

New Carrollton, Md. – The 2026–27 school year began Tuesday for students in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). Administrators highlighted a focus on accelerating achievement in mathematics and literacy, expanding advanced‑program access, and strengthening staff development.

Forward by Design: Acceleration 2029

The district introduced the Forward by Design: Acceleration 2029 initiative, a multi‑year effort aimed at boosting student performance in core subjects. District leaders said the plan includes targeted tutoring, data‑driven instruction, and partnerships with local businesses and community organizations to provide real‑world learning opportunities.

Two new elementary schools open

On the first day of classes, PGCPS welcomed students to two newly constructed schools. Margaret Brent Elementary opened in New Carrollton, while Templeton Elementary began serving families in Riverdale Park. Both facilities feature modern classrooms, upgraded technology labs, and dedicated spaces for arts and physical education.

Superintendent Dr. Monica Goldson noted that the new schools were designed with family needs in mind, offering extended hours for before‑ and after‑school programs and safe drop‑off zones for parents. “Our goal is to create learning environments where every child can thrive,” she said.

Community partnerships and parental involvement

The district emphasized its commitment to deepening community partnerships. Local churches, civic groups, and businesses have pledged support for mentorship programs, scholarship funds, and volunteer tutoring. Parents were invited to join advisory councils at each school to provide input on curriculum and extracurricular offerings.

Several parent‑teacher associations reported strong attendance at the opening week meetings, reflecting a renewed interest in school affairs after the summer break.

Looking ahead

PGCPS officials said the district will continue to monitor student progress throughout the year, using assessment data to adjust instructional strategies as needed. The Forward by Design plan includes annual public reports to keep families informed of academic outcomes.
