Primary results show surprise progressive wins and Trump-backed victories in key states

Tuesday’s primary contests across Florida, Alaska, Wyoming and California offered a mixed picture for both parties as voters selected nominees for upcoming midterm races. In Florida, progressive state representative Angie Nixon defeated former National Security Council official Alex Vindman, despite being out‑spent by more than a 16‑to‑1 margin. Nixon will now face Governor Ron DeSantis’s appointee, Sen. Ashley Moody, for the remainder of Marco Rubio’s Senate seat.

Trump‑backed candidates see mixed outcomes

Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, a rising star in the party and Trump’s choice, won the Republican nomination to succeed term‑limited Gov. Ron DeSantis, positioning him to become Florida’s first Black governor if elected. Donalds will face former Rep. David Jolly, who has switched parties multiple times, in the general election.

Elsewhere, Trump‑endorsed candidates experienced both victories and defeats. In Wyoming, Rep. Harriet Hageman, backed by Trump, easily captured the Republican Senate nomination to replace retiring Sen. Cynthia Lummis. In contrast, Trump‑favored candidate Catalina Lauf lost a Florida congressional race to Jim Schwartzel, owner of a conservative talk‑radio station.

Other notable primary results

In South Florida, Rep. Jared Moskowitz secured the Democratic nomination for a newly drawn, Republican‑leaning district, defeating union organizer Oliver Larkin. Long‑time Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz won a contentious Broward County race, beating several Black challengers, including former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus‑McCormick, who had resigned amid a pending federal indictment.

Alaska’s open primary featured two candidates named Dan Sullivan. Incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, a Trump ally, advanced alongside former Rep. Mary Peltola, who could become the first Alaska Native senator. A second Dan Sullivan, a retired teacher, denied claims he was a sham candidate.

In California’s Bay Area, the open primary for Rep. Eric Swalwell’s vacated seat advanced state Sen. Aisha Wahab and BART Board President Melissa Hernandez, keeping the district in Democratic hands. Outside spending from pro‑Israel groups was a prominent factor, with AIPAC’s super PAC spending over $2 million against Wahab and supporting Hernandez.

Wyoming’s gubernatorial primary saw state Superintendent Megan Degenfelder lose to former state Sen. Eric Barlow, a Marine veteran and veterinarian, despite Trump’s endorsement of Degenfelder.

These primary outcomes will shape the November midterm contests, where control of Congress remains narrowly in Republican favor.
