Pretrial hearing set as Matthew Farwell trial on Sandra Birchmore murder approaches

Stoughton residents will hear the last pre‑trial hearing on Thursday afternoon, less than two weeks before the murder trial of former police detective Matthew Farwell is slated to begin on Oct. 5. The hearing follows a recent federal ruling that allows Farwell’s defense to present evidence about the victim’s mental‑health struggles, while the prosecution may refer to Sandra Birchmore as a victim.

Background of the case

Birchmore, a 23‑year‑old woman who was pregnant with an unborn child at the time of her death, was found dead in 2024. Investigators say Farwell staged the scene to appear as a suicide. Earlier this year, a federal judge denied Farwell bail, describing the evidence against him as “very strong, if not overwhelming.”

Police misconduct allegations

The case has drawn additional community attention because Birchmore had previously been involved with the Stoughton Police Department’s youth explorers program. The department’s chief disclosed that three officers had inappropriate relationships with her, including one sexual relationship that began when she was 15. All three officers resigned after an internal investigation.

Trial logistics

Prosecutors estimate the trial will run about 20 days and have asked the judge to schedule two half‑day sessions each week, citing the “intensity of the trial.” They anticipate calling roughly 50 witnesses, ranging from law‑enforcement personnel and civilians to 12 expert witnesses.

Resources for victims

Authorities continue to remind the public that help is available for anyone experiencing domestic violence. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1‑800‑799‑SAFE (7233), online at thehotline.org, or by texting LOVEIS to 22522.

What’s next

The upcoming hearing will address remaining pre‑trial matters, including any final motions from the defense and prosecution. As the community awaits the trial, many residents hope the proceedings will bring clarity and justice for Birchmore, her family, and her unborn child.
