President Trump withdraws nomination of former Oklahoma trooper as ICE director

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is withdrawing his nomination of Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper, to serve as director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The withdrawal was sent to the Senate along with four other pending nominations.

Background on the nomination

In June, President Trump praised Schroyer as a “patriot with real operational experience, and proven leader with decades of experience locking up the worst of the worst,” when he first announced the nomination. Schroyer’s law‑enforcement résumé includes service as a Muskogee police officer and later as the head of the Emergency Services Unit for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a division that handles special operations.

Support from Oklahoma officials

Oklahoma’s senior member of the Trump administration, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, publicly supported the nomination when it was announced, noting Schroyer’s extensive experience in public safety.

Reason for withdrawal unclear

The administration has not provided a specific reason for the withdrawal, and no further comment was offered by the White House or the Department of Homeland Security.

ICE leadership context

According to reporting from CNN, ICE has not had a Senate‑confirmed director since the Obama administration, leaving the agency under acting leadership for an extended period. The nomination and subsequent withdrawal highlight the ongoing challenges of securing confirmed leadership for the agency.

Implications for immigration enforcement

While the nomination is no longer pending, the Trump administration continues to prioritize strong immigration enforcement policies. The withdrawal does not signal a shift in overall policy direction, and the agency will remain under the guidance of existing senior officials until a new nominee is presented and confirmed.

What’s next?

President Trump has not indicated whether he will put forward another candidate for the ICE director role in the near future. The Senate will continue to consider the remaining nominations that were submitted alongside Schroyer’s.
