President Trump Says He Would Allow Chinese Car Makers to Operate in the United States

President Donald Trump told Fox News host Brian Ingraham on “The Ingraham Angle” that he would not oppose Chinese automobile manufacturers establishing production plants in the United States. Trump said, “If China wanted to come in and open a plant to build their cars here, I’d be okay with that,” adding that the key factor is the employment of American workers.

Focus on American Jobs

Trump highlighted the precedent set by Japan, noting that Japanese firms already operate U.S. plants and hire U.S. citizens. “The big thing is they hire our people,” he said, framing the issue as a matter of job creation rather than foreign ownership.

Opposition to Mexico‑Based Production

The president also made clear his stance against a practice he views as a loophole: Chinese companies building vehicles in Mexico and then shipping them across the border to the United States. “I don’t want Chinese automakers to build cars in Mexico and ship them to the United States,” Trump asserted, positioning his view as protective of American manufacturing and trade fairness.

Reactions from Lawmakers and Industry

Trump’s comments come amid widespread criticism from members of Congress and major U.S. automakers, who argue that allowing Chinese factories on American soil could threaten national security and domestic industry. Critics contend that foreign‑owned plants may limit technology transfer and create dependency on overseas supply chains.

Industry leaders, however, have pointed out that foreign investment can bring capital, technology, and competition that benefit consumers through lower prices and more choices. The debate reflects a broader tension between protectionist impulses and the benefits of open markets.

Policy Context

The Trump administration has previously taken a hard line on Chinese trade practices, imposing tariffs on a range of Chinese goods and tightening export controls on critical technologies. While the president’s current remarks appear more permissive regarding manufacturing locations, they remain consistent with his broader goal of ensuring that any foreign presence in the U.S. economy directly benefits American workers.

Analysts note that any decision to permit Chinese automakers to build cars domestically would likely require coordination with the Department of Commerce, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), and relevant labor agencies to safeguard national interests and labor standards.

What This Means for Consumers

If Chinese manufacturers were to open U.S. plants, American consumers could see a wider array of vehicle options and potentially lower prices due to increased competition. At the same time, concerns about quality standards, warranty support, and long‑term service networks would need to be addressed.

For now, the conversation remains largely rhetorical, with no concrete proposals or legislative actions announced. The administration’s stance underscores President Trump’s willingness to consider foreign investment that creates American jobs, while maintaining a firm line against practices he views as undermining U.S. manufacturing.
