President Trump moves to break up dominant meat‑processing firms

In a post on Truth Social on Friday, President Trump said he is preparing a legal order that would give farmers and ranchers the right to process their own meat and other food products. The move is aimed at dismantling what he described as a “nasty monopoly” held by the nation’s largest processors.

National impact of a concentrated market

Four corporations—Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS USA and National Beef Packing Co.—currently control about 85% of U.S. meat processing. This concentration has contributed to rising grocery prices, especially for beef, as supply has struggled to keep pace with demand. The administration says the legal order would empower independent producers to bypass the dominant firms, increasing competition and potentially lowering costs for families.

Details of the proposed order

Trump did not specify which food sectors the order would cover, but he indicated that “legal documents are being drawn quickly.” Earlier this week, he also signaled interest in reviewing whether existing regulations on beef‑processing plants are overly burdensome. The White House has not yet released a formal draft of the order, and officials declined to comment further when contacted for details.

Related policy actions

Last week the president announced that additional ground beef could be imported into the United States without tariffs, a step intended to increase supply and ease price pressure on consumers. The Justice Department is also investigating whether meat‑packing companies have engaged in illegal practices that drive up beef prices.

These actions come as the meat‑processing sector faces a 75‑year low in supply, with rising cattle costs outpacing price gains. Consumers across the country are feeling the pinch at the checkout line, a concern that is likely to influence voting decisions in the upcoming November midterm elections.

What this means for families and farmers

If the order proceeds, independent farmers and ranchers could process their own products, reducing reliance on the four dominant firms. This could create new market opportunities for small‑scale producers, support family farms, and align with the administration’s broader goal of strengthening American agriculture and protecting consumer choice.

Stakeholders in the industry, including trade groups and consumer advocates, are expected to weigh in as the legal framework takes shape. The outcome will have implications not only for grocery prices but also for the competitive landscape of the nation’s food‑processing sector.
