President Trump meets Irish leaders in Dublin before heading to Doonbeg golf resort

President Donald J. Trump arrived in Dublin on Saturday for a brief diplomatic stop before traveling to his ocean‑front golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, to attend the Irish Open. The president met with Ireland’s head of state, President Catherine Connolly, and later with Taoiseach (prime minister) Micheál Martin at the government’s Farmleigh guesthouse.

Diplomatic talks in Dublin

At Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of President Connolly, the two leaders exchanged handshakes and a short conversation before a formal ceremony. An Irish Defence Forces band performed the U.S. national anthem and an honor guard stood at attention. After the ceremony, President Connolly introduced the U.S. and Irish delegations before the parties moved inside for a closed‑door discussion.

President Martin welcomed the visit, noting that the talks would cover “issues of mutual interest” and reaffirm the strong economic, cultural, and people‑to‑people ties between the United States and Ireland. He also expressed hope that an Irish golfer would lift the Irish Open trophy on Sunday, highlighting Shane Lowry’s position atop the leaderboard at the tournament’s midway point.

Trump’s Irish Open appearance

Following the meetings, President Trump traveled west across the country to Doonbeg, where his Trump International Golf Resort serves as the venue for the Irish Open. The resort is a major employer in the area, a point emphasized by his son, Eric Trump, who told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that the course provides significant jobs and investment for the local community.

President Trump’s presence at the tournament continues a pattern of the administration combining official duties with personal business interests, a practice that supporters argue brings economic benefits to host regions.

Local reactions

While some Irish residents expressed enthusiasm for the economic activity the resort generates, others voiced criticism. Taxi driver Christopher Fox, speaking to local media, said, “He’s causing mayhem in this city because he wants to go down to Doonbeg and play golf.” University student Mina Petrovski, identified as a student at a Dublin university, described the president’s “attitudes towards women, immigrants, and minority communities” as “abhorrent” and called the government’s welcome “shameful.”

Several left‑leaning opposition parties, anti‑military groups, pro‑Palestinian organizations, and environmental groups announced plans to demonstrate in Dublin on Saturday. These groups are not affiliated with any official government body.

Trade and policy on the agenda

Beyond the golf tournament, President Trump and Taoiseach Martin are expected to discuss trade and foreign‑policy matters. The White House has indicated that President Trump wishes to explore ways to strengthen trans‑Atlantic trade, despite ongoing differences over certain policy areas.

President Martin previously invited President Trump to Ireland during a St. Patrick’s Day meeting at the White House, underscoring the long‑standing diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

Context of the visit

President Trump flew to Ireland after observing the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. Prior to the trip, he delivered speeches at a political rally in Dallas, Texas.

The Irish Open marks the second European Tour event this year held at a Trump‑owned property, following the Nexo Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland. Earlier in the year, President Trump visited Scotland’s Turnberry and Balmedie courses, meeting with the British prime minister and the president of the European Commission.

Overall, the visit blends diplomatic engagement with the promotion of American‑owned tourism and job creation in Ireland, reflecting the administration’s broader strategy of pairing foreign policy with private‑sector investment.
