President Trump honors Cal Poly alum Victor Glover with Congressional Space Medal of Honor

San Luis Obispo, Calif. – President Trump visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on Thursday morning to award the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four astronauts of the Artemis II mission. Among the honorees was Cal Poly alumnus Victor Glover, whose achievement has ignited a wave of “Mustang Pride” on the San Luis Obispo campus.

Presidential ceremony and new Space Academy

During a half‑hour address to NASA officials and the assembled crew, President Trump announced an executive order establishing a United States Space Academy. The order calls for a dedicated institution to train the next generation of explorers, engineers, and leaders in space science.

Following the speech, the president placed the Congressional Space Medal of Honor around the necks of each Artemis II crew member – Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, Jeremy Hansen and Victor Glover. The medal, one of the nation’s highest honors for spaceflight, recognizes extraordinary achievement and bravery in the service of the United States.

Local reaction at Cal Poly

Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong praised Glover’s accomplishment, noting that it serves as a powerful example for current students and their families. “Victor’s legacy is already resonating throughout our campus,” Armstrong said. “His dedication to exploration and service inspires our students to aim higher and pursue greatness in science, engineering, and beyond.”

Students gathered on campus to celebrate, displaying banners and sharing messages of support on social media under the hashtag #MustangPride. Many parents expressed pride in seeing a local graduate recognized on a national stage, emphasizing the role of faith, hard work, and family values in Glover’s journey.

What the award means for the Artemis program

The Artemis II mission, the first crewed flight of NASA’s new Moon‑return program, marks a historic step toward returning Americans to the lunar surface and eventually sending astronauts to Mars. By honoring the crew, the Trump administration underscores its commitment to maintaining America’s leadership in space exploration.

President Trump’s executive order to create a Space Academy aligns with broader efforts to expand STEM education, increase private‑sector partnerships, and ensure that future generations have the skills needed to keep the United States at the forefront of space innovation.

Community impact

Local businesses and community groups have joined the celebration, offering discounts to students and organizing meet‑and‑greet events with alumni who have pursued careers in aerospace. The recognition also highlights the importance of supporting higher‑education institutions that produce leaders in science and technology.

As the nation looks ahead to the next phases of the Artemis program, Victor Glover’s story stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and family support – values that resonate deeply within the San Luis Obispo community.
