Presbyterian launches two mobile health clinics to serve rural New Mexico

Presbyterian Health Services is expanding its outreach to New Mexico’s most isolated neighborhoods by launching two new mobile health centers. The vehicles, stationed in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, are designed to travel statewide, delivering primary‑care services to residents who often face long drives to the nearest clinic.

Bringing doctor’s offices on wheels

Inside each mobile unit, patients will find a setup that mirrors a conventional doctor’s office, complete with examination rooms, diagnostic equipment, and a pharmacy counter. The goal is to provide the same level of care that patients receive in a brick‑and‑mortar clinic, but without the burden of transportation barriers.

Addressing gaps before they become crises

“We’re going to be working to address gaps in care with mobile health, ensuring that something that’s a minor issue doesn’t turn into a big headache down the road,” said Kris Gomez, a spokesperson for Presbyterian. By offering preventive screenings, chronic‑disease management, vaccinations, and basic urgent‑care services, the program aims to catch health problems early and keep families healthy.

Targeting the state’s most vulnerable areas

The mobile clinics will focus on counties where access to medical facilities is limited, including parts of the high desert, the Rio Grande Valley, and remote mountain communities. Residents in these areas often travel over an hour to reach the nearest hospital, a distance that can deter routine check‑ups and delay treatment for emerging conditions.

Community partnership and faith‑based support

Presbyterian’s initiative reflects a broader tradition of faith‑based organizations stepping in to meet local needs. By partnering with community leaders, schools, and local churches, the mobile units will schedule regular stops in town halls, school campuses, and faith‑based gathering places, ensuring that care is accessible where people already congregate.

How the service works

Patients can schedule appointments by calling a dedicated hotline or through an online portal. Walk‑ins are also welcome during scheduled stop times, which will be advertised in local newspapers, radio stations, and community bulletin boards. The mobile units accept most insurance plans, Medicaid, and offer a sliding‑scale fee structure for uninsured patients.

Looking ahead

Presbyterian plans to evaluate the impact of the mobile clinics over the next year, with the possibility of adding additional units if demand warrants. The organization hopes the model will serve as a template for other faith‑based and nonprofit groups seeking to bridge healthcare gaps in rural America.

Supporting families and preserving health

For many families in rural New Mexico, the arrival of a mobile health center means fewer missed work days, reduced travel expenses, and the peace of mind that comes from having trusted medical professionals nearby. As the state continues to grapple with provider shortages, initiatives like this underscore the vital role that community‑focused, faith‑driven organizations play in safeguarding the health of America’s heartland.
