Prattville Veterans Honor Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day

In Prattville, Alabama, members of American Legion Post 122 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1349 came together on Memorial Day to pay tribute to the brave service members who lost their lives in defense of the nation. The annual observance was a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those in uniform.

Honoring the Fallen

The ceremony included a symbolic remembrance table display, honoring prisoners of war and those missing in action. Attendees participated in a wreath-laying ceremony, followed by a moment of silence as taps played, creating a poignant atmosphere of reflection and gratitude.

Charles Marsh, Commander of the American Legion Post 122, emphasized the freedoms enjoyed by Americans today, which come at the cost of military members’ sacrifices. “They’re able to enjoy those freedoms at the sacrifice of military members who gave their life so that they can enjoy their barbecues, family time, their day off from work,” Marsh stated.

Guest Speaker’s Message

Gladys Leonard, the third division Vice Commander, served as the guest speaker, highlighting the critical role of the U.S. military in safeguarding freedom. She remarked, “Let us remember that without a U.S. military, the world would be a far more oppressive and darker place. Let us remember that freedom has no greater friend than the American soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, Coast Guardsman, and Space Force guardian.”

The observance also included the lowering of courthouse flags to half-staff, a gesture of respect and remembrance for the nation’s fallen service members. This local event in Prattville serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring those who have given their lives for the freedoms enjoyed by all Americans.
