Potential Crack in California Chemical Tank May Lower Explosion Risk

A potential crack discovered in a chemical tank in Garden Grove, California, may be relieving pressure and reducing the risk of a catastrophic explosion, according to Orange County Fire Authority Interim Fire Chief TJ McGovern. The tank, containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), has prompted the evacuation of about 50,000 residents in Orange County.

The discovery of the crack is seen as a positive development, potentially allowing authorities to adjust their response strategy and possibly reduce the evacuation area. Despite the pressure relief, the tank remains a concern due to its high temperature, which has maxed out at 100 degrees, complicating efforts to stabilize the chemical inside.

Community Impact and Response

Local residents have been spending the Memorial Day weekend in shelters, hotels, or with family and friends outside the danger zone. Popular tourist spots like Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm are not included in the evacuation zone. The chemical, MMA, can cause respiratory issues and skin irritation upon exposure, though current air quality readings remain normal.

Efforts to solidify the chemical from the outside inward continue, though success is uncertain. Authorities have released a blast zone map indicating potential impact areas should an explosion occur. GKN Aerospace, the company responsible for the tank, has apologized to affected residents and is working with emergency services to monitor and mitigate risks.

Legal and Governmental Actions

In response to the incident, a couple from the evacuation zone has filed a lawsuit against GKN Aerospace, alleging negligent storage and handling of MMA. The lawsuit seeks to address the disruptions and potential health risks faced by the community. California Governor Gavin Newsom has requested an emergency declaration from President Donald Trump to support ongoing response efforts.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer has set up an anonymous tip line for information related to the incident. The community remains on high alert as authorities work to prevent any further escalation of the situation.
