Postpartum psychosis case sparks online conspiracy claims against ex‑husband in Massachusetts

In the Boston‑area suburb where the tragic 2023 killings occurred, Lindsay Clancy has formally admitted that she strangled her three young children—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and infant Callan. Her legal team argues she should not face criminal liability because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and severe mental illness at the time.

Ex‑husband cleared by evidence

Law enforcement and prosecutors have repeatedly confirmed that Patrick Clancy, the children’s father, was not a suspect. Surveillance video, CVS receipts, and GPS data from his phone and vehicle place him far from the family home when the murders took place. Former NYPD chief Ken Corey explained that investigators would have used the same data to challenge any theory that the father could have committed the crime.

Corey added that if there had been any reasonable chance to create doubt about Lindsay’s responsibility, her attorneys would have pursued it. Instead, they have not contested the factual finding that she was the only adult present.

Why conspiracy theories persist

Despite the clear alibi, a wave of online commentary continues to target Patrick Clancy. Experts say the phenomenon stems from a combination of low trust in institutions and the emotional shock of a mother killing her children. Michael Wagner, director of the University of Wisconsin‑Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication, notes that people often turn to unverified explanations when official outcomes feel uncomfortable.

Social‑media platforms amplify such content because algorithms favor emotionally charged, hard‑to‑verify posts. Short video clips from the televised trial are frequently edited to suggest alternative narratives, prompting viewers to question the official story.

Legal response to defamation

Attorney Michael Cooper of Howard Cooper, Todd & Weld, representing Patrick Clancy, issued a statement calling the online accusations “patently false, defamatory, and injurious.” The firm warned that those spreading false claims could face real‑world consequences for harming the family’s health and safety.

These dynamics illustrate how, even in cases with strong evidentiary support, public discourse can drift toward speculation when trust in the legal system erodes.
