Residents of Port St. Lucie are being urged to exercise caution after a black bear was spotted in the Town Park community on Tuesday morning. The Port St. Lucie Police Department has issued a warning, noting that bears become more active during this time of year as they search for food.
Safety Guidelines for Residents
The police department emphasizes that while encountering a bear may be unexpected, it is not necessarily a cause for alarm. Bears generally avoid human interaction. However, residents are advised to take precautions, especially when letting pets outside. Making noise before opening doors or keeping dogs on a short leash can help prevent defensive reactions from bears, particularly female bears with cubs.
The police department has outlined several safety protocols for those who may come across a bear:
- Maintain a safe distance and give the bear plenty of space.
- Avoid approaching or attempting to feed the bear.
- Keep children and pets away from the animal.
- Secure garbage, pet food, bird seed, and other potential food sources.
What to Do if You Encounter a Bear
If you unexpectedly encounter a bear, it is important to remain calm and not run. Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight, and speak in a calm, firm voice. Ensure the bear has a clear escape route.
Residents who feel threatened by a bear, observe an injured or orphaned bear, or witness someone feeding or harming a bear are encouraged to contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
