Port St. Lucie Mayor Shannon Martin recently discussed the city’s traffic congestion and affordability issues. With the Florida primary election approaching on August 18th, Mayor Martin is one of three candidates vying for the mayoral position.
Addressing Traffic Congestion
Mayor Martin highlighted the city’s efforts to alleviate traffic congestion, citing over 90 infrastructure projects in various stages of development. These projects include the construction of Floresta Drive, Phase 3, and Port Saint Lucie Boulevard South.
The mayor acknowledged that addressing traffic congestion is a significant challenge, particularly given the city’s rapid growth during the COVID-19 pandemic. She emphasized that design and construction projects take time and must follow formal bid processes and legal procedures.
Affordability and Property Taxes
Mayor Martin also discussed affordability in Port St. Lucie, noting that the city has lowered its millage rate every year for the past decade. She explained that this helps reduce the tax burden on residents, with only 22% of the overall tax bill going to the city.
A proposal to eliminate property taxes is currently being considered, which could have significant impacts on the city’s general fund. Mayor Martin stated that the city’s financial management team is working to assess the potential effects and develop a plan to address them.
