Port St. Lucie – On Thursday night a 37‑year‑old Port St. Lucie resident, identified as Joshua Gallagher, was taken into custody after a reckless high‑speed chase that threatened public safety on South Hutchinson Island. The incident began in the 9600 block of South Ocean Boulevard when a St. Lucie County sheriff’s patrol deputy attempted to stop Gallagher’s pickup truck for a traffic violation.
Deputies pursue despite dangerous maneuvers
According to Capt. Andrew Bolonka, director of communications for the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, the driver ignored the stop request, made a U‑turn and began spinning donuts in the roadway, forcing other motorists to swerve. After briefly stopping, Gallagher executed another U‑turn, cut across lanes and accelerated toward the deputy’s patrol vehicle.
“The deputy tries to stop the vehicle; all of a sudden, the vehicle lunges, takes off, accelerates, does another U‑turn, and then starts allegedly heading straight toward the deputy,” Bolonka said, noting that the deputy’s body‑worn camera captured the moment he shouted, “Oh, he almost hit me.”
Special units assist and a PIT maneuver ends the chase
Members of the department’s Special Investigations Unit and air‑support deputies joined the pursuit. Even after stop sticks were deployed, Gallagher continued to flee. Deputies ultimately performed a precision‑intervention‑tactics (PIT) maneuver along Seaway Drive, bringing the pickup to a stop.
When officers ordered Gallagher to exit the vehicle, he refused. Deputies then deployed pepper balls into the truck, after which the suspect surrendered without further incident.
Charges and statements from law enforcement
Gallagher now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, and resisting arrest without violence. He remains in custody at the St. Lucie County Jail.
Capt. Bolonka emphasized the broader danger of such reckless behavior: “When people make decisions like this, they put not only deputies and other law‑enforcement officers in peril, but they also endanger the general public. If we can do so safely, we’re going to put it to an end.”
Authorities expressed relief that no injuries occurred during the pursuit, praising the professionalism and restraint shown by the deputies.
Community impact
The chase highlighted the importance of vigilant law‑enforcement presence on Florida’s roadways, especially in areas where tourists and families travel. Residents of Port St. Lucie and the surrounding Treasure Coast can take comfort in knowing that local deputies are prepared to act decisively to protect public safety while minimizing risk to the community.
St. Lucie County officials continue to encourage drivers to obey traffic laws and cooperate with law‑enforcement officers. The sheriff’s office reminded the public that reckless driving not only endangers the driver but also puts innocent motorists and first responders in harm’s way.
