Port Canaveral is investing nearly $1 billion in capital improvements over the next five years, including a new commercial fishing facility. The Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners approved the next phase of a $5.2 million commercial fishing facility that will provide a permanent home for local fishermen.
Expansion Details
The project includes a new 16-slip dock, 125 feet of dedicated bulkhead, fish cleaning stations, office and restroom buildings, truck and trailer parking, and storage facilities. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2027.
Port leaders said the investment reflects the port’s commitment to the commercial fishing industry, which predates its rise as one of the world’s busiest cruise ports. Port CEO Capt. John Murray stated, ‘Port Canaveral began as a commercial fishing port in 1953, and our decades-long legacy with this industry continues to this day.’
The new working waterfront is being developed as the port prepares the southwest waterfront for the future construction of Cruise Terminal 4. For commercial fisherman Jasper Lee, the port’s rapid growth has been impossible to miss. ‘It has changed quite a bit in the last 10 years,’ Lee said.
Other Projects
A new $93 million, 13-story parking garage adjacent to Cruise Terminal 6 will add more than 3,700 parking spaces, increasing the port’s total parking capacity to nearly 17,500 spaces. Cruise Terminal 5 is undergoing a $78 million expansion that will nearly double the facility’s size to 170,000 square feet.
Construction is also scheduled to begin this summer on a $95 million renovation of Cruise Terminal 10. The upgraded terminal will be designed to accommodate ships carrying up to 6,700 passengers and is expected to be completed in November 2027.
