Pope Leo XIV draws 700,000 to Champs‑Élysées for historic outdoor Mass

Paris witnessed an unprecedented gathering on the Champs‑Élysées Saturday as Pope Leo XIV celebrated a massive outdoor Mass. The Vatican estimates more than 700,000 people attended, surpassing the 600,000 pre‑registered participants.

Mass and message

The American pope rode a popemobile along a two‑kilometre parade route to the Place de la Concorde, where he delivered a homily urging believers to let their faith overflow and to bring the “living water of the Holy Spirit” to all of France. He emphasized social‑justice themes, noting that his message extends beyond Catholics.

Broad appeal

While many attendees were Catholic, the crowd also included people of other faiths and those with no religious affiliation. Entrepreneurs, families, and young adults described the event as a reminder of what truly matters amid today’s troubling images and societal divisions.

Faith resurgence

Leo highlighted a surprising rise in new converts and adult baptisms, noting that France recorded 13,000 baptisms this year—tripling the annual average since 2016. Although experts caution that overall church attendance remains lower than in past decades, the surge signals a hopeful trend for French Catholics.

Historical backdrop

Place de la Concorde, once a site of Revolutionary executions, hosted the Mass, marking a new chapter for the iconic square traditionally associated with the Republic. Critics citing France’s 1905 law on secularism argued the venue should have been a more neutral location such as the Invalides.

Community response

Local residents shared personal reflections. A 42‑year‑old Catholic mother said the Pope’s call to social‑justice resonated, while a 40‑year‑old startup founder, not Catholic, appreciated the reminder of shared human values. Grandparents brought grandchildren, hoping to give them “unforgettable memories” of faith and unity.

The event concluded with the Pope thanking the crowd in French, calling the faithful “the saints of France” and praising their courage and presence.
