Pope Leo XIV has issued a letter congratulating Americans on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, addressing principles of liberty, religious freedom, and human dignity. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops shared the message on July 3, 2026, ahead of Independence Day.
Emphasis on Religious Freedom
The Pope emphasized religious freedom as the right of every person to worship according to conscience and to practice their faith openly, without coercion or fear, describing it as central to the American promise.
In the letter, Pope Leo XIV wrote: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Americans on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This semiquincentennial marks that defining moment in the history of the United States of America, July 4, 1776, that gave enduring voice to the ideals of liberty, equality, the pursuit of happiness, justice and democratic self-government.”
The letter stresses “the God-given dignity of every human life,” calling for protection “from its beginning at conception until natural death” and compassion for the vulnerable. It addresses immigration, stating, “Defending human life also includes welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants, whose hopes, sacrifices and contribution have formed part of the history of this country from its very beginning.”
Continuity with Predecessors
Pope Leo XIV’s message echoes predecessors in celebrating American ideals while urging fidelity to Catholic principles. Pope St. John Paul II praised U.S. religious liberty during his visits. Pope Benedict XVI addressed similar themes of faith and citizenship. Pope Francis frequently highlighted immigration and the poor, issuing Laudato Si’ on environmental concerns and engaging U.S. leaders on migrants.
