Polk County’s Extreme Temperature Plan is scheduled to go into effect Friday morning due to dangerous heat in central Iowa. The plan will go into effect at 8 a.m. Friday and end at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Cooling Centers and Emergency Shelters
Many Polk County libraries and community centers are identified as cooling centers. The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority will provide free rides to cooling centers. Riders should tell bus drivers that they want to go to a cooling center when they board.
Emergency shelters will also provide weather amnesty. These include Catholic Charities, Central Iowa Shelter & Services, Ellipsis, Hawthorn Hill, Hope Ministries, and Iowa Homeless Youth Center.
Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s Friday, with highs reaching 95F. The heat will continue into the weekend, with temperatures staying in the mid-90s on Saturday and Sunday.
