Police shooting in Suitland front yard prompts Maryland AG investigation

On Friday night, residents of Suitland, Maryland, witnessed a chaotic police encounter that ended in a fatal shooting in a private front yard. At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers from Prince George’s County Police spotted two vehicles near the intersection of Randolph Road and Suitland Road. The officers pursued the cars onto Reamy Drive, a dead‑end street that ends in the front yard of local resident Christian Funes.

According to the police report, one of the vehicles turned into Funes’ yard and began moving toward the officers. An officer then discharged his service weapon, striking the adult male driver. The driver, described as a man in his 20s or 30s, was immediately attended to by the officers, who performed CPR for five to ten minutes before an ambulance arrived and took over transport.

Resident’s account

Funes, who was downstairs at the time, recalled hearing three gunshots and rushing upstairs to protect his family. “I hurried up, ran upstairs—because I was trying to make sure my family was safe—and told everybody to get down,” he said. He described seeing two police cruisers block the street and more than 20 police vehicles surrounding the area.

Funes watched as officers attempted lifesaving measures on the wounded driver in his yard. “They gave them CPR for about five to ten minutes until the ambulance came,” he recalled. “My heart goes out to the family. It’s not something you want to see, especially in front of your house.”

Official statements and investigation

Prince George’s County Police released a statement confirming that an officer discharged his weapon for reasons still under investigation. “For reasons still under investigation, an officer on scene discharged their service weapon striking the driver, who is an adult male. We extend our sincere condolences to his family,” the department said.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has opened a separate investigation into the shooting. Authorities are seeking additional witnesses and video evidence, noting that the officers involved were wearing body‑worn cameras. Police indicated that the driver’s identity will be released in due course.

Community impact

The incident has raised concerns among Suitland residents about safety and police transparency. While the investigation proceeds, neighbors are left to process the unsettling experience of a violent encounter occurring on a residential street.

Local officials have not yet commented on any policy changes or procedural reviews that may result from the investigation. The community awaits further information from both the police department and the Attorney General’s office.
