Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) has launched a statewide program of free home energy checkups, giving residents a practical way to improve efficiency and reduce monthly electric costs. The service is available both in‑person, with a PNM energy ambassador visiting the home, and virtually, allowing homeowners to participate from any location.
What the checkup looks like
During a typical visit, an energy ambassador—such as Anthony Altamirano—walks through the house, inspecting doors, windows, heating and cooling systems, major appliances and any other items that affect energy use. Altamirano explained, “We’ll walk around the home together, look at doors, windows, heating, cooling, appliances, anything that affects energy use.”
In a recent assessment, Altamirano examined a 2014‑model refrigerator and identified areas where air was escaping, including older windows and deteriorating weather‑stripping. He pointed out a crack in the weather‑stripping and noted, “We’re just looking at the weather stripping, which it is starting to crack right here. You can see the cracking.”
Simple fixes and long‑term tips
The checkups often include on‑the‑spot improvements, such as replacing cracked weather‑stripping and swapping out outdated incandescent bulbs for energy‑efficient LEDs. Altamirano also offered practical advice: re‑caulk windows when cracks appear, replace air filters regularly, and turn off lights when leaving a room.
Additional suggestions from PNM include using thick curtains or blinds to block direct sunlight, keeping freezers well‑filled to reduce cycling, and maintaining regular HVAC maintenance. These small actions, when combined, can produce noticeable savings over time.
Seasonal timing and rebates
With recent rain and cooler weather, PNM spokesperson Eric Chavez highlighted the value of seasonal checkups. “Making sure what you want to be in the house stays there and what you want to stay outside of the house stays there. So it’s a great opportunity. While we’re grateful for the rain and the cooler weather that it brings, it’s a good opportunity to think about these things,” he said.
After the assessment, homeowners receive a detailed report outlining recommended improvements and information about available rebates. Chavez added, “We offer these year‑round and encourage customers to do it when they feel it’s appropriate for them and when it’s a good time for them.”
How to sign up
Residents interested in a free energy checkup can register through PNM’s website at pnm.com/iw/checkup. The program aims to empower New Mexicans to take control of their energy use, lower utility bills, and contribute to a more sustainable future for the state.
