Plymouth Jury Remains Deadlocked in Lindsay Clancy Trial on Sixth Day

Jurors in the high‑profile Lindsay Clancy murder trial reconvened Thursday at the Plymouth County Courthouse for a sixth day of deliberation. The 12‑person panel, along with six alternates, has twice told Judge William Sullivan they cannot reach a unanimous decision on whether the former labor‑and‑delivery nurse is criminally responsible for the deaths of her three young children.

Trial background

Both the prosecution and defense agree that Clancy strangled her children in the basement of their home in 2023. The defense, led by attorney Kevin Reddington, argues that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis – a rare mental‑health emergency that can distort a mother’s sense of reality. Reddington also suggested that inadequate medical care may have worsened her condition. Prosecutors from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office maintain that the killings were pre‑planned and that the nation’s health‑care system is not on trial.

Legal stakes

If the jury ultimately finds Clancy guilty of murder, she faces a life sentence. A verdict of not guilty on the basis of mental disease or defect would likely keep her confined to a psychiatric hospital. The judge warned that if the jurors remain at an impasse, he could declare a mistrial, sending the case back to its original status – a murder charge with Clancy held at a psychiatric facility while authorities determine the next steps.

Potential outcomes

Should a mistrial be declared, prosecutors could seek a new jury and schedule a fresh trial, or they might offer a plea agreement, according to Boston defense attorney Brad Bailey, a former prosecutor not involved in the case. Bailey noted that the threat of a retrial often motivates defense counsel to explore settlement options.

Postpartum psychosis context

Medical experts estimate postpartum psychosis affects 1 to 2 per 1,000 women after delivery. While most women with the condition do not harm their children, severe cases can lead to dangerous behavior toward both the child and the mother herself. The Cleveland Clinic describes the disorder as a mental‑health emergency that can impair reality testing. Researchers at the Medical University of Lublin in Poland found that about half of those diagnosed have a prior psychiatric history, with bipolar affective disorder being the most common risk factor.

Courthouse security concerns

During the trial, a separate incident involved Dawn Light, a retired nurse and Clancy supporter, who was arrested for allegedly filming jurors leaving the courthouse. Light entered a not‑guilty plea and was ordered to stay away from the court, jurors, and witnesses. Judge Sullivan reminded jurors that a court order prohibits any filming, following, contacting, or tampering with jurors.

Judge’s instructions

After the jurors reported another deadlock, Judge Sullivan issued a “dynamite charge,” urging jurors not to abandon their convictions simply to reach a verdict, but to seriously consider opposing viewpoints and reassess their positions if appropriate. He noted that a new jury might be more impartial or competent, a practice upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in many states.

The trial continues to draw intense local interest, reflecting broader concerns about mental‑health resources for new mothers and the balance between accountability and compassion in the criminal justice system.
