Plano Independent School District has been honored by the Career and Technical Association of Texas as a Career and Technical Education District of Distinction. The award recognizes the district’s leadership, innovative programming, industry partnerships and strong student outcomes in career‑technical education (CTE).
New CTE Center opens its doors
On Nov. 4, the district opened a state‑of‑the‑art CTE Center at 1865 Alma Drive. The facility houses 19 programs of study, including culinary arts, cybersecurity, robotics, banking and welding. Students toured classrooms and hands‑on labs, getting a first look at the spaces designed for real‑world skill development.
Superintendent Theresa Williams said, “Through exceptional educators, meaningful industry partnerships and real‑world learning opportunities, we are empowering today’s learners to become tomorrow’s leaders and make an impact on the global workforce.”
Impressive enrollment and certification numbers
During the 2025‑26 school year, Plano ISD recorded 27,184 CTE course enrollments and earned 4,139 industry‑based certifications, an increase of 634 certifications over the prior year. The growth reflects the district’s focus on aligning curricula with workforce needs and providing students with credentials that support college applications, apprenticeships or direct entry into the job market.
CTE Director Karen Buechman added, “This recognition comes from the work of our CTE teachers, administrators, students and community partners. We are proud of the opportunities our programs provide students to build skills, earn credentials and prepare for their next steps.”
Programs span the district
CTE courses are offered across Plano ISD’s middle schools, high schools, senior high schools and specialized campuses such as Academy High School, the Health Sciences Academy and the Electrical Engineering Academy. The new center’s program directory lists offerings in health care, construction, technology, business and hospitality, giving students a broad menu of pathways to explore.
Community partners play a key role, supplying industry‑based certifications and real‑world project opportunities. By linking classroom instruction with local employers, the district aims to ensure that graduates are ready to meet the demands of today’s economy.
What this means for Plano families
For parents and students, the distinction and the new facility signal a continued investment in practical education that complements traditional academic routes. The district’s emphasis on hands‑on training supports families seeking clear career pathways for their children, reinforcing Plano’s reputation as a community that values both academic excellence and workforce readiness.
As the district moves forward, officials plan to expand partnerships, add more certification options and continue tracking outcomes to ensure that Plano’s students remain competitive in a rapidly changing job market.
