Plano Independent School District is once again being recognized statewide for its robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings. The Career and Technical Association of Texas named Plano ISD a CTE District of Distinction for the second consecutive year, highlighting the district’s commitment to preparing students for college, careers, and the workforce.
Certification numbers show strong growth
During the 2025‑26 school year, Plano ISD students enrolled in 27,184 CTE courses and earned 4,139 industry‑based certifications. That represents an increase of 634 certifications, or roughly an 18% jump from the previous school year. The rise reflects both expanding program options and deeper partnerships with local employers.
Expanding opportunities for students
Plano ISD now offers more than 30 CTE programs of study, allowing students to explore career pathways as early as seventh grade. These programs continue through middle schools, high schools, and specialized academies, giving learners hands‑on experience in fields such as culinary arts, welding, cybersecurity, and health sciences.
A centerpiece of the district’s investment is the new Career and Technical Education Center, a 159,000‑square‑foot facility located at 1865 Alma Drive. The center consolidates 19 CTE programs under one roof, providing modern labs, workshops, and classrooms designed to mirror real‑world workplaces.
Leadership praises the achievement
“This recognition comes from the work of our CTE teachers, administrators, students and community partners,” said CTE Director Karen Buechman. “We are proud of the opportunities our programs provide students to build skills, earn credentials and prepare for their next steps.”
Superintendent Dr. Theresa Williams added, “Through exceptional educators, meaningful industry partnerships and real‑world learning opportunities, we are empowering today’s learners to become tomorrow’s leaders and make an impact on the global workforce.”
Why the distinction matters
The CTE District of Distinction award honors districts that demonstrate strong leadership, innovative programming, and positive student outcomes. For Plano ISD, the designation underscores a broader effort to align classroom instruction with the skills employers value, ensuring graduates are ready for high‑growth, well‑paying jobs.
Local businesses have welcomed the initiative, noting that students arriving with industry certifications can transition more smoothly into apprenticeships and entry‑level positions. The district’s emphasis on hands‑on learning also supports families by providing clear pathways to stable, well‑compensated careers.
Looking ahead
Plano ISD plans to continue expanding its CTE offerings, adding new certifications in emerging fields such as renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. The district aims to maintain its upward trajectory, fostering a workforce that meets the evolving needs of the regional economy while giving students a solid foundation for lifelong success.
